MALAD MURDER: I WAS FED UP AND KEPT STABBING HIM, LOSING COUNT OF THE NUMBER OF TIMES I SLASHED HIM, SAYS EX-HOCKEY PLAYER APPAIYA CHENANDA'S WIFE AMITA
Days after Malad resident Amita was arrested on charges of murdering her husband Appaiya Chenanda, a former junior national hockey player, in their 27th floor apartment on August 19, she has told the police that her rage was a culmination of a lengthy abuse she suffered at his hands.
Confessing to killing her 52-yearold husband, Amita, 45, said she "lost count of the number of times" she stabbed him. Chenanda was found in a pool of blood by neighbours at Agarwal Trinity Tower in Malad (W) around 2 pm on August 19.
Amita, who also suffered knife injuries, initially told the police that her husband attacked her, after which he stabbed himself to death.
The couple's neighbours include a TV actress and her boyfriend who reside on the 26th floor. Chenanda had a son from his first marriage, and a daughter from his marriage with Amita.
In her statement to police, Amita said the day she ended up killing her husband had, ironically, started off on a "cheerful note".
"We were alone in the house and my husband was drinking whisky. Noticing him in a good mood, I suggested we visit a psychologist to help him deal with his mood swings. His mannerisms changed in a matter of seconds, and he turned aggressive and abusive. Even before I could react, he was standing in front of me with a kitchen knife, and attacked me. Something within me snapped as I grabbed the knife, and I started stabbing him. I had enough of his abuses, and lost count of the number of times I knifed him," Amita said in her statement.
She revealed that she was married to him for 15 years, and that he had been undergoing treatment to control multiple personality disorder three years prior to their wedding."He had stopped working for more than 10 years, having left a well-paying job with a multinational conglomerate."
"He had even stopped taking treatment for his mental condition. I used to work as chemical engineer at a private firm, but quit the job a couple of years ago as my husband was an extremely suspicious and possessive person," she said in her statement.
Amita claimed that the couple had blown all their savings, including their provident funds, and every now and then, she would borrow money from her friends, which would further enrage Chenanda.
"We would have violent fights. He would scream abuses, attempt to throttle me, kick and punch me saying I was having affairs behind his back. Yes, I am close to some of my friends, because they have stood by me," she said in her statement. She said it was true that she often demanded that he hand over the Malad apartment to her.
"I have a daughter who's still studying. I feared what will happen to her in case my husband killed me, so I demanded that he hand over the flat to me.
"That would of course lead to more fights. He had turned me into an insecure person as he often threatened to give everything to his former wife and their son," Amita said in her statement.
